Waves breaking over dark red coastal rocks under a cold, grey sky, with Churchill Island visible across the water in the distance.

No matter the conditions

Days like today remind me why I love getting out with the camera, no matter the conditions. There’s beauty in the rough and rugged moments too. You just have to be willing to get a little wet to find it.

Right on cue, Newhaven’s pelicans were riding the chop like seasoned sailors and the gulls carving through the wind with impossible ease. One particularly enthusiastic pelican throwing its wings up in front of me as if to say, “Welcome to my world.”

With grey skies pressing low, the tide surging in, and Churchill Island sitting quietly across the water like a silhouette in the storm. The waves tumbling over the red rock as the wind whipped straight through you. But even in the weather’s worst mood, there’s a raw beauty you can’t help but admire.

It’s funny on days like this, when most people stay indoors, the coastline feels more alive than ever. The birds don’t mind the chill, the sea doesn’t slow down, and the camera always finds something worth capturing.

Wet, windy, freezing… and absolutely worth it. Then in the afternoon the sun came out, but that’s another story.
